Deschutes County Sheriff's Office issued the following announcement on May 17.

On May 15, 2022 the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an armed possible suicidal male subject that was travelling east from Bend. A DCSO deputy located the subject parked in the area of Highway 20 east near mile post 14.

With concerns for commuter safety, the decision was made to shut down the highway while deputies negotiated with the subject. The highway was closed for approximately one and a half hours while deputies spoke with the subject.

Negotiations with the armed male were successful and he was eventually detained without incident. He was ultimately transported to St. Charles for a mental health evaluation.
